Kwame Brown's return won't happen soon

LOS ANGELES (AP) -Lakers center Kwame Brown, sidelined since spraining his left ankle Dec. 31, won't return to action any time soon.

An MRI conducted by specialist David Porter in Indianapolis confirmed the Lakers' previous diagnosis of a severe sprain and bone bruise, team spokesman John Black said Thursday before a game against the Pistons.

The Lakers had hoped Brown would play during an eight-game road trip that began Jan. 30 in New York and finishes Sunday in Cleveland.

Black declined to predict when Brown will play again, but that's not expected to happen until sometime next month. Brown is averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds.

The Lakers have also been playing without forward Luke Walton, who sprained his right ankle Jan. 26 against Charlotte. The team was hopeful Walton would return during the road trip as well, but that appears doubtful.

``He continues to make some progress,'' Black said. ``It's coming along slowly. It's unlikely he'll play on this trip, but we don't want to rule him out for sure of Sunday's game at this point.''

Walton is averaging 11.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
