Levin and Smith move in front in Montreal

08/18/2007 - Ile Bizard, QC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Canadian Tour money leader Spencer Levin and Byron Smith, close friends off the golf course, are tied for the lead after three rounds of the Montreal Open.

Levin posted a four-under 68 on Saturday, while Smith was two better with a 66. The pair is knotted at 15-under-par 201.

Brent Schwarzrock posted a four-under 68 in round three and is third at minus-14.

Wes Heffernan, the defending champion and leader after the first two rounds, played poorly on Saturday. He opened with a bogey and it got worse. Heffernan shot a two-over 74 and is alone in fourth place at 12-under-par 204.

"It was a bad day, almost a disaster," admitted Heffernan, a two-time winner this season. "I'd rather be leading, but you almost get more aggressive when chasing. I'll put it behind me. It was just one of those days."

Levin made the turn at even par, then birdied his first two on the second nine. He holed out from a bunker for an eagle at the 13th, and parred out for his share of the lead.

Now it's a final-round pairing with his buddy.

"We're good friends, so it will be a lot of fun," said Levin. "Any time you have a chance to win, you have to be happy. Playing in the final group on Sunday, that is where you want to be."

Smith, who won in Mexico this year, made the turn at five-under thanks to an 60-foot eagle putt at the eighth. He was one clear until he could not save par from a bunker at the par-five closing hole.

"That was a tough day," said Smith, possibly referring to the heavy wind at Saint Raphael Golf Club on Saturday. "I knew if I could stay in the 60's, I would make a move. I'll take a 66."

Jason Hartwick (70) and Justin Snelling (71) share fifth at minus-10.

Matt Bettencourt (66), Ryan Horn (69) and Joseph Lanza (71) are tied for seventh place at nine-under-par 207.
