08/11/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brandon Webb puts an impressive personal streak on the line when the Arizona ace takes the mound for the Diamondbacks in tonight's second test of a three-games series with the visiting Washington Nationals.
Webb, the National League's reigning Cy Young Award winner, is making a strong case for a repeat honor judging by his latest accomplishments. The standout righty has not been scored upon in his last three starts and carries a 24- inning shutout streak into this evening's matchup.
The All-Star hurler threw seven scoreless frames in back-to-back victories over Florida and San Diego to close out July, then continued his outstanding run with a complete-game blanking of the rival Dodgers on Sunday. Webb scattered seven hits and struck out four without issuing a walk to record his first shutout of the season.
The streak has lowered Webb's season earned run average to 2.92, the fourth- best mark in the NL at the moment.
Webb owns a victory over the Nationals already this season, as he delivered seven innings of one-run ball in Arizona's 7-1 road triumph on April 7. That was his first career win in five lifetime games (four starts) versus the Washington/Montreal franchise, and he sports just a 5.14 ERA in 28 lifetime innings against the club.
John Lannan, fresh off the best and most publicized outing of his brief career, gets the call for Washington. The rookie took the mound Monday in San Francisco, where all eyes were on Barry Bonds and the slugger's quest to become baseball's all-time home run leader, and flourished in the high-profile conditions.
Lannan limited the Giants to one run over a career-high seven innings of work in his third big-league start, and held Bonds hitless in three at-bats. The young lefty did not factor in the decision, however, of a eventual extra- inning loss for Washington.
The 22-year-old has recorded one win, two no decisions and a respectable 3.71 ERA since being promoted to the majors on July 26.
The scorching Diamondbacks maintained their three-game lead in the NL West by routing the Nationals, 11-4, on Friday. Conor Jackson belted a pair of two-run homers and finished 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Arizona to its 16th victory in its last 19 games.
The Diamondbacks snapped a 4-4 tie by scoring five times in the seventh inning, with both Mark Reynolds and Miguel Montero coming through with two-run singles during the frame.
Mark Reynolds ended 2-for-3 with three RBI for Arizona, which improved to 11-3 at home since the All-Star break and is an outstanding 36-22 at Chase Field this season.
D-Backs starter Livan Hernandez (8-7) surrendered three home runs in the sixth inning but settled down afterward to pick up the win. The former National gave up four runs on six hits over seven innings of work.
Saul Rivera (4-4) took the loss in relief after recording just one out in the seventh and letting four runners reach base, all of whom scored.
Felipe Lopez, Ryan Zimmerman and Austin Kearns all homered in the loss, only Washington's third in its last 11 games.
Arizona has won six straight encounters with the Nationals and swept a four- game series at RFK Stadium in April. Washington/Montreal had won 15 of the previous 17 matchups between the clubs prior to that streak.
